India, EU to hold another round of talks soon

India and the European Union on Tuesday agreed to hold another round of talks soon to try and build a common ground on the issue of agricultural exports.

"Very soon our team will hold a meeting with the EU team to deliberate on the issue of agricultural exports. However, the venue and the time have not yet be formalised," Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Murasoli Maran said after an hour long meeting with the commissioner for agriculture in the European Commission Franz Fischler on Tuesday.

Maran told reporters that India had raised the issue of enhancing export quota of basmati rice and sugar to the EU as well as duty concessions for the same.

"We also suggested having uniform international sanitary measures, especially with regard to marine exports, but the EU has expressed inability saying that they are not members of CODEX," he said.

CODEX is an international organisation which frames sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures. India is a member of that organisation. The meeting was attended by senior commerce ministry officials including secretary Prabir Sengupta, special secretary Nripendra Misra, joint secretary R P Agarwal and others.
