'Dewang was driving himself too hard…'

Kanwal Rekhi

The news of Dewang Mehta's death is shocking. I recently met him at Nasscom 2001. In fact, he was supposed to come to San Jose on Thursday to attend the 'Vision Maharashtra' function.

It is really sad to hear about his death. Dewang was a powerhouse. I have known him for about 12-13 years. I have known him right from when he started Nasscom. He and I were very good friends.

The IT industry will do fine, but he'll really be missed. Life goes on, but this surely is a big loss. Also, it is a very big personal loss for me.

He was very intense, but level-headed. We were deep friends. We would discuss economics and other subjects all the time.

Of late, I noticed that he used to dose off at meetings, obviously a sign of a man who is overworked and driving himself too hard. That was when I told him that he needs to slow down. I knew he was a diabetic.

He used to give 120 per cent of himself to his work, because, in a way, he had no family.

I used to always joke with him that he should definitely get married before he turns 40.

I will miss my friend sorely.

As told to Kanchana Suggu
Kanwal Rekhi is the co-founder and chairman of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE).
