DoT clears Bharti's applications for basic services

Government has cleared the applications of Bharti Enterprises for basic telecom licences in eight circles.

Sunil Mittal promoted Bharti Enterprises would be issued letter of intent soon as they have submitted all the necessary clarifications the department had sought, Department of Telecom officials said on Friday.

The clearance for Bharti was given within a week of Reliance, Tatas and HFCL getting a go-ahead for venturing into basic services.

Applications for about 100 circles from various players including Essar, VSNL and MTNL are still pending with the government for want of clarification from respective parties.

The LoI to Bharti, which was the first private operator to start basic telecom services in Madhya Pradesh, was issued for eight circles including Delhi, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka and Haryana.

The ministry officials said that licences would be issued after the companies fulfilled all obligations as stated in the LoI.

According to LoI, the licences for basic telecom services would be given only to those players who were not in arrears for any licence granted to them or their partners for any telecom services in the country.

In a circular to the appliants for basic services, DoT had said that licences would be issued on the basis of certain guidelines including payment of entry fee and furnishing of bank guarantee.
