Cabinet panel to decide Amitabh Kumar's fate

Baburajan K & Thomas K Thomas

The fate of Amitabh Kumar, director (operations), also the former acting-chairman and managing director, of Videsh Sanchar Nigam, still hangs in balance as his extension has been referred to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the prime minister, with the home minister and minister of communications as members.

According to top government officials, the minister of communications has refused to put his recommendation for an extension after the MOC had extended his term twice.

The Union telecom ministry is yet to decide on extending Kumar's term, according to top sources in the ministry. Senior government officials said the ministry was still discussing the issue and may take a final decision within the next couple of days. Kumar was not available for comments.

Kumar is understood to have attended a couple of meetings with government representatives on the issue of VSNL divestment in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Although, technically, Kumar's term had expired on April 3.
