Santro maintains lead over Zen in March

NetScribes/ Mahesh Shetty

Action in the high-profile B segment (1000cc and above) is still as hot as ever.

Maruti Udyog Ltd’s Zen, the pioneer in the segment, has once again lost out to Korean small and mid-size car maker Hyundai India’s Santro. Sales figures reveal that the Santro has maintained its lead over the Zen for March 2001 as well.

Hyundai’s aggressively promoted Santro sold 7,780 units against MUL’s benchmarked Zen, which sold 6,272 units. This represents a 24 per cent lead for Santro over Zen.

MUL saw Zen sales fall 19 per cent from the same month last year when it sold 7,721 Zens. Against this, the Santro’s 7,780 units are a 21 per cent jump over the 6,405 units sold in March 2000.

During calendar 1999, the Santro sold 58,650 units and the Zen sold almost 76,600 units. In calendar 2000, the Santro overtook the Zen with total sales of 65,490 units while the Zen sold 65,140 units. In 1999, Santro came close to the Zen on many occasions but never actually overtook it.

In January 2000, the Santro broke the psychological barrier by selling 7,400 units against Zen’s 6,337 units. By June that year, Hyundai’s small car repeated the performance (Santro - 5,010; Zen - 3,937) and then there was no looking back from there.

By the end of calendar 2000, the Santro and the Zen both had roughly 25 per cent of the total B segment sales.
