Janki Ballabh to become SBI chairman on Wednesday

Janki Ballabh will assume charges as the chairman of the country's largest commercial bank, State Bank of India (SBI) on November 1, 2000 following retirement of the present chairman G G Vaidya at the close of business hours on October 31, 2000.

Vaidya who joined the bank as probationary assistant on January 15, 1962, became the chairman of the bank on February 1, 1999.

Ballabh, prior to his elevation to the highest post, was the deputy managing director and group executive of the bank's international banking group. Ballabh has been with the bank for 34 years, having joined the bank as probationary officer in the year 1966.

Ballabh has held a number of critical assignments including that of the chief general manager, product development and marketing and personal banking at the corporate centre, general manager (operations) at the New Delhi local head office and deputy general manager at the Mumbai zonal office.

He brings with him a rich experience of over 34 years covering all aspects of the bank's operations. Ballabh's tenure will be upto October 31, 2002.
