Compaq to sell products on the Web too

Fakir Chand in Bangalore:

Compaq Computer Corporation, the $39-billion global supplier of computing systems, on Thursday became the first OEM company in India to offer its wide-range of products over the Web with an option to even conduct end-to-end transaction process online.

Reinforcing the parent company's vision of `everything to the Internet', Compaq India, the Rs 1.08-billion wholly-owned subsidiary, will sell its products like iPaq desktop SB series, the Presario range, finger-print ID and smart card readers, micro portable projectors, and Armada Notebooks on its online store: www.compaq.co.in/cooldukaan.

Targetted primarily at the small-medium businesses segment as well as the small offices and home offices (SOHO) market, the Compaq online store will also have a customer call centre in Bangalore which will compliment the web-based access for end-to-end dealings.

According to Compaq's vice-president Paul Blinkhorn, the launch of online store in India not only cements the company's leadership position as an innovator in this web driven economy, but also in tune with the commitment to providing customers with best technology and world class service at a click away.

"The new Compaq client solutions are designed for the new age in business computing, when internet-centric and mobile computing will take centre stage. The solutions will be applicable to all types of businesses and applications, from the desktop to palmtop, for notebook systems, and low-cost thin clients and terminals, for both the wireless as well as the wired world."

Customers can also configure-to-order their requirements by placing their orders online to Compaq India's manufacturing plant in Bangalore, which became a part of Compaq after its merger with Digital India. "In this new age of computing, Compaq aspires to create a world where virtually all information is online. Being a customer focused company, we are exploring new avenues to enhance customer service, and we see the Internet as an enabler to outperform," claimed Compaq India's sales director Neelam Dhawan.

Dhawan, however, maintained that insofar as the cost price was concerned, Compaq products ordered over the Web will be sold at the maximum retail price that are applicable on the retail front through its channel partners or re-sellers.
