Sharp unveils new research centre in India

Japanese electronics and information technology giant Sharp Corp officially opened a new research and development facility on Tuesday in Bangalore.

The research centre, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp Labs America, will develop software for Sharp's digital imaging and digital document systems group which manufactures digital copiers and printers.

The research centre, the company's fifth outside Japan, will focus on the areas of conceptualisation, design and development of Windows software.

"Though this base was set up almost a year ago, only recently has it started functioning as a full-fledged software development center," said Toyonki Tanaka, deputy group general manager of Sharp's digital documents systems group.

"Today it houses 51 software professionals and we intend to triple this number by 2002," Tanaka said.

"We will also over a period of time look at expanding the present scope of operations from the development of digital imaging software needs to the other software requirements of the Sharp Corp."

Jon Clemens, chief of Sharp Labs America, said the company had chosen Bangalore because it was fast emerging as one of the top IT centres of the world.
