Wipro to set up IT centre in West Bengal

Information technology major, Wipro Limited, has confirmed that it would set up a software development facility in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya said in Calcutta on Tuesday.

Bhattacharya, speaking at the 146th annual general meeting of Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the software development centre, to come up near the city, would employ nearly 2,500 highly qualified engineers.

He said that Wipro was among some of the big names which would be setting up facilities in the state. The other prominent companies who had already invested in West Bengal in the IT area were Tata Consultancy Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers,

Cognizant Technology, Sema and R S Software. Commenting upon the performance of the industry in West Bengal, the chief minister said that during 1999-2000, state's IT industry exported Rs 7 billion and was expected to go up further in the current year.

Talking about the state's industrial progress in the last 24 years, he said the state government had successfully turned around sick PSUs such as Westinghouse Saxby Farmer, Saraswaty Press and Shalimar Works.

He criticised the central government for not reviving PSUs like Weighbird India, MAMC, Cycle Corporation of India, and Bharat Process and Mechanical Engineers, but instead closing them down.

He said that these actions would have an adverse impact on the economy.
