Harshad Mehta discharged in bribery case

Our correspondent in Bombay

Harshad Mehta has been discharged by Special Judge V B Gupta, in a case filed against him alleging that the 'Big Bull' had bribed former Planning Commission deputy chairman V Krishnamurthy.

The 150-page order also discharges Krishnamurthy in the case.

The case pertains to the issue of a loan to the tune of Rs 3.27 million which Mehta had given K J Investments, in which one of Krishnamurthy's sons, K Jayakar, was a director.

Harshad Mehta's lawyer Rebecca John told rediff.com, "The judge did not find any prima facie evidence against the accused in the alleged charge, as highlighted by the CBI."

The CBI filed the case against Mehta and Krishnamurthy in 1992. Following this, Mehta was taken to New Delhi on 'transit remand'.

"This case has nothing to do with the securities scam," John stated.

"The charge against Mehta was that he bribed Krishnamurthy in the form of the loan extended to K J Investments. The fact, however, is that no bribe was given. The payment was made by cheque as per the agreement," John added.
