Netscape to develop enterprise Net products in India

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Netscape Communications, the US subsidiary of America Online Inc, has set its sights on India to develop Internet products for its global enterprise services by utilising the excellent native software talents.

With an initial investment of $10 million, NC's wholly-owned Indian subsidiary, Netscape Communications India Ltd, will have a team of 100 software professionals working in Bangalore on next-generation software products for both its parent companies.

As a leading provider of software and services over the Internet, Netscape and AOL provide interactive services, web brands, Internet technologies, and e-commerce solutions to millions of end-users and institutions.

Announcing the launch of Indian operations, Netscape India managing director Maneesh Dhir said the subsidiary would also undertake projects for iPlanet E-commerce Solutions, a global strategic alliance of Sun, Netscape and AOL, in the area of enterprise Internet software.

"The brief to the project team is to enhance iPlanet Application Server 6.0, a high-performance, scalable Java J2EE platform for developing e-commerce applications and services; iPlanet Market Maker for next-generation digital marketplaces; iPlanet BuyerXpert, for e-procurement, and iPlanet Messaging Server," Dhir stated.

For NC and AOL, Netscape India will leverage its skills with iPlanet to build applications around its latest 6.0 version of browser, which is not merely a desktop or server enabling, but also Web and WAP-enabling.

"In the Internet product area, Netscape India will focus on the parent company's global brands, including ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger Service, Digital City, MapQuest, and 'AOL by phone'," Dhir affirmed.

"We acknowledges India as a key development site for NC and AOL. The much-valued Indian software will bring us critical strengths. We will be hiring many more Indian software engineers to work on projects for both the parent companies that will enable both of them to serve their worldwide base of enterprise and consumer customers," Dhir averred.
