Enron in talks with SEBs to lay optic fibre network

Enron Corporation which is setting up its broadband services in India, is currently negotiating with major state electricity boards, including Maharashtra and Karnataka boards, to lay optical cable-based telecom network through the transmission line infrastructure of the respective SEBs.

According to Enron officials, Enron Broadband Services (EBS), a telecom subsidiary of Enron, will lay the overhead fibre-optic network starting from Bombay to Bangalore in the south and New Delhi in the north, and creating a circle linking Pune, Hyderabad and Madras.

In Bombay, EBS will start functioning its international Web site hosting centre at Lower Parel in January which would also allow corporates, media and entertainment firms to use the facility for high-speed data transfer.

The cost of the project is $9 million.

Officials said that such centres would be developed by EBS in collaboration with its partners like Global Tele-Systems in major cities in the coming years.

In Maharashtra, it is engaged with MSEB to set up the optical cable overhead network at an estimated cost of Rs 6 billion, covering a distance of about 1,125 kms.

EBS in India would engage in bandwidth trading through their data centres as well as provide video on demand for their users. It would also distribute content such as feature films through the Internet.

In the US, it has tied-up with blockbuster for providing the content on the Internet.

The technology involved in the project was the Enron's BOS technology, developed jointly with Sun Microsystems. Enron would be using its own satellite agreements for the international gateway.

In future, officials said, Enron has plans to emerge as a major trading agency in distribution of electricity and bandwidth among the major customers in India.
