2nd Mumbai Auto Show off to a good start

The 2nd Mumbai Auto Show organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Automotive Component Manufactureres Association of India (ACMA) showcased wares of some of the leading auto majors like Bajaj, Hyundai, Hindustan Motors, Mahindra, TVS, Kinetic and others.

Besides vehicles, several accessories, components, fuels and lubricants manufactured both in India and abroad were on display.

Speaking at the inaugural function Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Manohar Joshi emphasised that the Indian auto industry was one of the oldest in Asia and had an investment of Rs 50 0 billion and a turnover of Rs 600 billion.

"It contributes to 4 per cent of India's GDP," he said.

He also assured that the forthcoming auto policy would be an enabling and proactive one, stressing on the fact that the government would take care to ensure that India would not become a dumping ground for used vehicles.

Baba N Kalyani, Chairman of the 2nd Mumbai Auto show stated that this show was spurred by the success of the earlier show held in 1999.

Mahindra Voila!

Mahindra Auto Specialities Limited announced the launch of Designercars, a range of custom-developed cars to cater to an increasingly savvy and well-informed audience.

Their Web site www.designercars.com allows customers to make their own vehicles using various options available to them.

Here's the Voila, a special offering for the 'woman-on-the-go'. Conceptualised by Sangeeta Ramachandran, a graduate from the National Institute of Fashion Technology. The Voila has a lavender metallic exterior, height adjustable seats with pink leather and embroidered upholstery, kid's play station, a compact kit and also an umbrella holder.

All this for an additional Rs 150,000-200,000.
