'IISc-Monsanto tie-up not for gene project'

The Society for Innovation and Development of the Indian Institute of Science today clarified that the joint research programme, involving Monsanto was not on the terminator genes project.

In a statement released in Bangalore, SID Chief Executive H P Khincha said the programme between IISc and Monsanto was not even contemplating to work with terminator genes or any other project which might be detrimental to the interests of farmers and people of the country.

Reacting to press reports, he said the Union government had issued instructions not to entertain patents for the terminator genes. All the quarantine stations would get the imported seeds analysed for the gene using molecular probes to guard against entry of such materials.

The agreement with Monsanto had been signed as part of the promotion of IISc-industry interaction to provide avenues for productive and use of technological and scientific discoveries at IISc, he added.
