Congress, JD protest Prasar Bharati ordinance

The Congress and the Janata Dal today accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government of bypassing the Lok Sabha on the Prasar Bharati Bill and sought President K R Narayanan's intervention in the matter.

Congress leaders P J Kurien and Ajit Jogi and Janata Dal leaders S Jaipal Reddy told newspersons that a delegation of members of Parliament would meet the President to apprise him of the Centre's move to bring about an ordinance on the Prasar Bharati.

They said the ruling coalition deliberately did not introduce the Prasar Bharati Bill in the Rajya Sabha after its passage in the Lok Sabha though the Upper House was in session till yesterday.

The Rajya Sabha was bypassed with a motive to bring an ordinance, Reddy said observing if the Bill had come to the Rajya Sabha, it would not have seal of approval of the house.

Jogi said the delegation would explain to the President how the government has attempted to undermine the democratic process in this regard.
