Top 9 entrance exams for aspiring doctors

Here's everything you need to know about eligibility, test pattern and selection processes to crack All India and independent medical entrances across country.

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS - MBBS)

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament.

Every year more than 80,000 candidates apply for MBBS course in AIIMS for only 50 vacancies, which makes it one of the toughest of entrance examinations.

The cost of the application form for AIIMS is Rs 1,000 and it can be filled online or offline.

Eligibility: Applicants must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam with at least 60 percent aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

Exam date: Generally on June 1

Test pattern and selection: AIIMS Entrance for MBBS is a paper-based test of 3 hours duration.

It has 200 multiple-choice and reason-assertion type questions.

There are 60 questions each from Physics, Chemistry and Biology and 20 questions from General Knowledge.

There is negative marking for incorrect answers.

2. CMC-Vellore


Christian Medical College Vellore, which is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, holds an all-India entrance test (CMC Vellore Common Entrance Test) every year to select students for admission into various undergraduate level medical and paramedical courses.

The intake for MBBS is 60 seats. The cost of the application form is Rs 850.

Eligibility: Minimum 60 per cent marks at 10+2 level each in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Exam date: Generally in May or June.

Test pattern and selection: The entrance exam questions are from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Ability and a few questions of current topical interest.

After the declaration of the result a final list for counselling is prepared based on merit and successful candidates are called for interview.

3. Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute University


The UGC has awarded the Deemed University status under the name of Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute.

The university is further accredited with the status of B+ (78.5 per cent) by the NACC. Dr MGR University's Faculty of Medical Sciences is an important department in the university and has a huge intake of students each years.

The cost of application form is Rs 550.

Eligibility: Minimum 55 per cent marks at 10+2 level each in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Those with BSc Degree from any Indian University (recognised by the association of Indian University and accepted as equivalent by the standing Academic Board and Governing council of the University) with one of the following subjects as major subject-Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and one other science subject at least up to ancillary level.

Exam date: Generally happens in May

Test pattern and selection: The test  has multiple sections from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

The selection of students shall be based solely on the merit of the students who appeared in the Qualifying examination and Entrance examination/Viva Voce conducted by the university.

4. Dr DY Patil University (AIET)


Dr DY Patil University conducts its own admission test, that is, All India Entrance Test (AIET) for admission to various undergraduate courses such as MBBS and BDS in Dr DY Patil Medical College & Hospital and Dr DY Patil Dental College & Hospital. DY Patil Medical College & Hospital was established in 1996 and is approved by Medical Council of India and Government of Maharashtra. DY Patil Medical College has 150 seats for MBBS course.

Dr DY Patil Dental College has 100 seats for BDS course and is approved by Dental Council of India. Application form can be obtained from the University office on payment of Rs 500.

Eligibility: A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50 per cent aggregate marks in PCB (40 per cent for SC/ST).

Exam date: Generally conducted in May.

Test pattern and selection: The AIET will have one question paper for each subject.

The test will have a duration of 3 hours and would comprise 200 Multiple choice Questions (MCQ) of the Objective Type.

Each question will carry 1 mark and the questions will be in English.

Candidates who secure the minimum 50 per cent marks at AIET and satisfy the eligibility norms laid down by respective councils will be selected for the respective course.

5.Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences


The Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences was declared as a Deemed University in 2005.

The University has different colleges for different courses like Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is for MBBS and Sharad Pawar Dental College is for BDS course.

The annul intake recognised by university for MBBS course is 150 and 100 for BDS.

The University conducts its own entrance exam for undergraduate course -- DMMIS AIPMET.

The University is accredited by NAAC 'A'.

Eligibility: A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50 percent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and should have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st of December of the academic year concerned.

Exam date: Generally happens in June

Test pattern and selection: Test has three sections containing questions from Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Selection will be done on the basis of inter se merit of the successful candidates at the All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test namely DMIMS AIPMET.

6. Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University


The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences was declared as 'University' under section 3 of the UGC Act in May 2005.

The University now has a number of constituent colleges, which include Medical, Dental, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Biotechnology.

The Medical college has been recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council.

The University conducts its own entrance test called KAIET (Krishna All India Entrance Test).

The cost of information brochure and application form is Rs 500 and the cost of entrance test is Rs 1000.

Eligibility: A candidate for open category must have obtained not less than 50 per cent (i.e. 150 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.

A candidate belonging to backward class must have obtained not less than 40 per cent (ie 120 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.

Exam date: Generally happens in May

Test pattern and selection: The KAIET will consist of one common question paper in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology) consisting of 200 Multiple choice questions, 50 in Physics, 50 in Chemistry and 100 in Biology.

There is no choice among the questions.

The candidate is expected to attempt all the 200 questions.

Of the four circles provided for selection of answers against a question, the candidate should fill up one circle only.

Each correct answer will be given 1 mark. There shall be no negative marking for wrong answers and the duration of exam is three hours.

Selection will be based solely on merit.

7. Manipal University, Karnataka


Manipal University, Karnataka conducts an All India Manipal University online entrance test for admission to its MBBS and BDS programmes.

The entrance test fee is Rs 1000 for each course and the cost of application form is Rs 600.

Eligibility: Candidate should not be below 17 years of age and must have cleared 10+2 or equivalent education with 55 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Application deadline: March 11, 2013

Exam date: April 15, 2013 to May 15, 2013

Test pattern and selection: The admissions to the MBBS and BDS courses are done on the basis of the entrance test conducted by Manipal University.

The Entrance Test is of 2½ hours duration and comprises 240 multiple choice questions.

It is divided into four sections namely: Physics (60 questions), Chemistry (60 questions), Biology (80 questions) and English and General Aptitude (40 questions).

Candidates need to score a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the online entrance test to be eligible for admissions.

8. National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG)


The Central Board of Secondary Education will conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in the academic session 2013-14.

The cost of application form of Rs 1000 for General/OBC category and Rs 500 for SC/ST/PH.

There is also a reservation of seats in government medical colleges under 15 per cent all India quota.

Eligibility: Candidate should be 17 years of age or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course and is an Indian National and passed 10+2 or equivalent education with 50 percent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology.

The candidate who is appearing in the qualifying examination, that is, Class 12 Standard in 2013 whose result is awaited, may also apply for the same.

Application deadline: December 31, 2012 (without late fee)

Exam date: May 5, 2013

Test pattern and selection: The entrance examination shall consist of one paper containing 180 objective type questions (four options with single correct answer) from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology).

There is also negative marking -- each correct answer will get 04 marks and for each incorrect response, 01 mark will be deducted from the total score.

The selection is based on the marks obtained by candidate which is minimum of 50 per centile in 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, held for the said academic year.

The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in All-India common merit list.

9. Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC entrance through NEET)


Admission to Armed Forces Medical College, Pune shall be subject to the norms prescribed by the Directorate of Armed Force Medical Service, Ministry of Defence, Government of India.

Candidates qualified in NEET-UG and opted for admission in AFMC are required to appear for a second stage screening conducted by the AFMC.
