Last week we asked readers to vote for the most hated cities in India based on ten attributes. By the midnight of Sunday, September 8, 3,450 readers cast their votes and here are the results of that survey.

The ranking has been decided based on the maximum number of readers ranking a particular city at number 1 in their list of most hated city.

The ten attributes we assigned to 25 Indian cities were thus: Corruption, atitude towards women, traffic congestion, ugly, untidy appearance, offensive people, pollution, goondaism and crime, inadequate mass transport system, work culture and racism.

Here are the top 5 most hated Indian cities in descending order...

5. Kolkata

Of all the 3,450 readers who voted only 118 ranked Kolkata as the most hated Indian city at number 1.

64 readers thought Kolkata was the least hated Indian city and ranked it at number 25.

And here's how the cookie crumbled for Kolkata on the basis of the ten attributes we had asked readers to vote on, on individual city pages:

33 per cent of our readers said they hate Kolkata the most because of its ugly and untidy appearance. Interestingly, Kolkata has such architectural marvels like the Victoria Memorial, the Writers' Building and the Kolkata Maidan, the largest urban park in the city.

The second top reason why readers love to hate Kolkata is for its traffic congestion. 20 per cent of the readers don't much like the traffic congestion in the city. 9 per cent readers said goondaism and crime is their topmost reason to hate the historic city .

8 per cent hate the pollution in the city the most.

Interestingly, only 6 per cent readers voted for corruption, work culture and inadequate mass transport system each as their main reason for hating the city.

Racism, cited by 3 per cent readers as the attribute they hate the most, offensive people at 2 per cent and attitude towards women at 2 per cent are some of the good things that readers have to say about The City of Joy.

81 people voted on the Kolkata page till midnight September 8.

4. Patna

Surprised to see Patna as the fourth most hated Indian city?

210 readers ranked it at number one expressing their view about the city being the most hated for them. Against these only 8 readers ranked Patna at number 25 making Bihar's capital as their least hated Indian city.

The Nitish Kumar magic doesn't seem to be working with readers. Despite the Bihar chief minister being lauded for his all-round efforts for maintaining law and order 37 per cent voted Patna as the number one city they hate for prevalence of goondaism and crime. 23 per cent hate the city because of corruption, 15 per cent for its ugly and untidy appearance and 10 per cent for its offensive people.

Readers think the city does not have much of a problem on issues like racism (2 per cent), traffic congestion (1 per cent) and pollution (1 per cent).

59 people voted on the Patna page till midnight September 8.
