Our love story would sound quite filmy but this is what it is like:
On February 15, 2005 I met the love of my life Charu Saboo in a train. We got talking and she asked me some questions about electronics.
Charu was going for an MBA interview to ICFAI and I was going for an exit interview to Hyderabad after which I would join Nokia in Chandigarh.
That day we must've spoken for a little over 15 minutes and exchanged our emails.
It wasn't love at first sight. But a few days later we started communicating through emails and became good friends.
Four months later, we started calling each other up and decided to meet in Indore on August 11, 2005.
After returning from Indore, I gave our relationship a serious thought and decided to propose to her the next time I met her. This was on November 2, 2005.
By then we were in love but marriage was still far away.
Charu said it wasn't possibly because her family didn't accept love marriages. I returned home to Chandigarh dejected. Over the months our telephone calls continued and I convinced her to marry me.
Now came the difficult part -- convincing our parents.
Both our parents rejected the idea downright. There were concerns about her caste, age (there is an age gap or about seven years between us) and social standing (she comes from fairly rich family).
Finally, I decided to look for a job in Indore and joined Idea Cellular on a handsome pay packet.
Soon after, I met her father and showed him all my documents including my salary slip to convince him that I was doing quite well for myself.
A few months later he called me over to meet some of his other family members. I remember the day vividly because there were some 20 people who were bombarding me with all kinds of questions.
On January 2, 2007 her parents visited my parents in Delhi. After an hour-long meeting they turned down the proposal pointing out that we stayed in a government accommodation.
Finally, Charu and I gave them an ultimatum and announced that we wouldn't marry anyone else.
So six months later, the families agreed and our engagement date was fixed for August 13, 2007.
There was more to follow though. I fell seriously ill and was admitted to the ICU. I had suffered multiple organ failure and had almost died.
Finally on August 28, 2007 I was discharged from the hospital. But now her parents were apprehensive -- they didn't want their daughter to marry a man who was all but dead a few weeks ago.
But better sense prevailed. Both our parents met and decided that the date of the marriage be fixed on February 10, 2008.
On that day we got married with sagai, baarat , reception and the works!
It has been over two years since the day. We've also been blessed with a baby boy and life is good. Our families have come to terms and are quite happy now.
