Laser lights, funkadelic style from Manish Arora!

In fitting fashion, Manish Arora blew it away with his first-ever showing at Lakme Fashion Week, which drew Day One to a close.

Over the top -- that's designer Manish Arora for you, in a nutshell. His finale on the first day of the LFW opened with a black-and-white clip of the 1927 classic movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang, where a mad scientist in a laboratory creates a 'machine human' by experimenting upon a young woman, Maria.

This was followed by a short laser show, after which Arora's 'Marias' made their way onto the runway in bright, super-sparkly, outrageous silhouettes, colourful wigs and pasted-on lips. Take a look.

Pia Trivedi opens the show in a hot pink hairpiece and plunging dress in striped, clashing sparkles, with a bubble silhouette round the hips.

Going into overdrive

Pink, blue, orange, silver, black...we keep counting off the colours as the lasers subside and another number with drooping sleeves makes its way on to the ramp.

The same scheme

We see the same pattern once more, this time on pants and a matching asymmetrical top that reveals a hint of tummy.

Gaga style

Very Lady Gaga-esque, a dramatic armour-like wrap with mosaic musings is worn over a striped outfit.

Shifting gears

Arora shifts his palette to grey, black and gold with this fitted ensemble, complete with side-pockets.

Laser lass

Next we have this futuristic fashion -- the dress is rather wearable, but the leggings are outlandish to say the least. And those shades actually have laser lights attached on either side of the frame!

Fanning out

Oriental fan-like embellishments adorn this black outfit, worn over blue (surprisingly matte!) leggings.

Second coming

We see another sharp dress in the same vein, this time with exaggerated puffed sleeves and hip-heavy cut.

Cut-away cool

Diandra Soares steps out in a dare-to-bare cut-away ensemble, worn over black sequinned pants.

Taking the plunge

Now we have sequins on top, with a down-to-the-navel neckline, while the skirt shows off a quintessential kitschy Arora design.

Going the silky route

The fabric tones down to a silkier finish with this bright but decidedly smooth number.

Looking sharp

Matching leggings are worn underneath a seemingly mechanical-inspired blouse -- check out those sharp cuts!

Kaleidoscopic reverie

The designer continues his kaleidoscopic reverie with a high-collared dress and tights.

Patchwork pride

Patchwork is executed with a finish few can boast of on this jacket dress.

Sequinned sequence

We see Diandra once more, in a mish-mash of sequins that literally leave us needing glares!

Bright sunset

We see a return to the earlier sparkles, but with a new set of sunset colours and this time, large flowers adorn the hem.

Alien trio

The 'showstoppers' step out -- a gold sequinned pantsuit, a black-gold encrusted dress and a jacket and pants that are decidedly tame in comparison.

In case you're wondering what's sprouting out of their ears, those are muffs with tiny lights attached at the ends!

Stepping out

Manish Arora looks pleased at the success of his showing -- or maybe he's gloating at how everyone's mouths have fallen open!
