Take your cue for New Year styles from the stars -- here are the wardrobe must-haves for 2012!
Last year was all about androgyny, jumpsuits, statement neckpieces...
But what do the coming months hold in store for us in terms of style? While some hot looks from 2011 will endure, the rest will make way for brand new ones.
If you don't want to take our word for it, who better than our sexy celebs to drive the trends home?
Here we bring you twelve 'it' items for '12 -- so all you wannabe fashionistas, take note!
Leather shorts
Shorts are all about showing a little (okay, a lot of!) leg, but when they're leather, they take things to a whole new level of 'oomph'.
They're sensual, they're haute and they're at the top of the list because they're trending in a major way at the moment -- just ask Rihanna, who's a big fan.
Lace and crochet

At the other end of the spectrum from dominatrix leather we have all things flirty, feminine and delicate -- namely, crochet and lace.
Yes, you read right. No longer strictly for grannies, lace and crochet are both back in a big way, so get your groove on this coming summer in something akin to Selena Gomez's delightful cocktail.
Peplum flair

For the uninitiated, a peplum is a short ruffle or overskirt that features on the waistline of a garment, be it a dress, jacket or blouse.
The best part of peplums being 'in' at the moment is that you can adapt this trend to suit your needs -- they can complement someone on the slimmer side by giving them added curves, or then help to disguise a bit of a belly!
And of course, peplums can be seen on a whole variety of silhouettes, so all you have to do is pick one that flatters you -- Miranda Kerr certainly did!
Sharp jackets

The jacket continues its reign into 2012 with sharp cuts and perfect fits.
You can opt for a wholoe range of colours, because it doesn't look like this trend is going out anytime soon and the brighter the better! Or you can keep it classic like supermodel Elle Macpherson in black.
Big shoulders

The bigger the better -- just don't go all Lady Gaga with them, or you'll have trouble squeezing into a car!
Big shoulders serve to flatter your figure by creating the illusion of a smaller waist. Just a word of advice -- opt for them on outfits in solid colours, or the overall look becomes a bit too busy. Here, actress Katie Cassidy gets it just right.
Paisley prints

This one certainly took us by surprise, but hey, who are we to argue with the likes of Demi Moore?
Paisley has also been seen on some of the leading runways across the world and for this year at least, the pattern seems to be making its presence felt bigtime. We don't know how long it will last, so jump on the bandwagon while you can.
Ab-tastic eveningwear

This look takes guts -- and rock-hard abs like Gwyneth Paltrow's!
Cropped eveningwear has taken to the red carpet with a bang and is going strong at the moment. It's a head-turning concept, but if it goes wrong, it can go horribly wrong.
So basically, this one's only for the adventurous, edgy fashionistas who don't mind taking style risks. And yes, you better have a bod to match up to the attitude, or it won't do much good!
Plug pastels

Rich citrine hues give it up to pale pastels in 2012. Lavender, sky blue, light green, baby pink and the like are colours you should keep a lookout for.
Even if you're a vibrant person, there are ways of making your presence felt in pastels -- just take a page out of popster Katy Perry's book!
Pyjamas

They may not be a particularly flattering garment, but pyjamas seem to have exited the bedroom and made their way onto the streets and occasional red carpet.
Celebs in particular seem to love stepping out in their jammies and you have to admit, there is something 'cool' about them. Check out actress Jessica Szohr in her pyjama ensemble. You may also notice that she's channeling another trend -- paisley!
Antique embroidery

Glee star Lea Michele created a stir on the Golden Globes red carpet this Sunday and not without good reason -- she looked absolutely stunning.
Take-your-breath-away gowns sporting antique embroidery like this Marchesa masterpiece are always making the news of late. If you can afford an haute couture item like this one, go for it by all means. Because it's going to be a glamorous 2012 for sure!
Bodysuits

Hmmm. Can't guess how many takers there will be for this style, but hey, if it's a trend, it's a trend!
Of course, you don't have to team your bodysuit with a sheer skirt like Madonna -- you can wear it with a skirt or pants that don't put the whole of it on display.
But the bodysuit certainly seems to have found a lot of favour with the famous, particularly the bold among them.
Statement accessories

And finally, we come to the 'it' accessories for the year.
Chunky, overly-large neckpieces are not-so-hot anymore, but statement neckpieces are still much to be desired. Just make sure the beads are not each the size of your head.
Purse-wise, the satchel is quite the prized item and besides its popularity, the practicality is not to be scoffed at -- pour all of your essentials into it. Sensible and chic, now that's a winner for sure!
