Makeup experts Cory Walia and Clint Fernandes tell us what's in -- and what's not!

What are the colours for summer 2011? What makeup mistake are most women guilty of? Which celebs get their look wrong?

We caught up with makeup experts Cory Walia and Clint Fernandes recently and got the lowdown on all the above and more.

Can you tell us what colours are 'in' this season?

Cory: For eyes green is huge, internationally and in India.

Indians have been scared of using green on the eyes, not realising it's the tone of green you use that counts. If it is a cold tone, it doesn't do much for the eyes. But when it's like mehendi, moss or limey -- with a hint of yellow and not blue -- green suits the Indian skin immensely. Used in the correct place at the right time, in the correct manner it's fantastic.

The other colour that is huge for eyes is nude. That forms a base colour on which you highlight with one of the multicolour eyeliners.

So you have pinks, greens, almost-purple and blues that are closer to aqua green. These are the single highlight on a backdrop of nude or green, or a combination of the two. The story centres around these colours.

As far as lips and cheeks are concerned, soft pink and soft orange corals. But I believe that cheeks and lips are just incidental, as they only serve to complement the eyes. So the focus remains on the eyes. If you ask me what colours are in for the lips, I'd say nude with hits of coloured shimmer.

The focus of the story is skin texture and the eyes.

Clint: The 'in' colours for the season are shades of green, shades of blue, leaf-green, hints of orange, pinks. It's like opening a storybook -- the freshness of colour, the sparkle...It's not really about intense dark colours, it's brighter and summery.

'Talcum powder is NOT a beauty aid'

What would you say are the worst mistakes Indian women make when it comes to applying makeup?

Cory: The first is to think that talcum powder is a beauty aid!

Also, since they have been given a complex from childhood about their skin tone and colour, they try to look fairer using foundation and concealer without understanding that it is quite visibly obvious when they restrict it to just their face! They haven't completely done what they're supposed to do, to make sure that it looks (gestures) all over. These are huge mistakes.

Another is incomplete eye makeup because they refuse to use mascara. So everything is beautiful -- eye-shadow, liner and all and there's no mascara, there's no eyelash curling and they have beautiful, long lashes which are drooping downward! It completely ruins the effect of all the mehnat that they've put into it.

The third mistake they make is not using a professional when they decide to get their eyebrows shaped or plucked!

Clint: One is choosing the wrong foundation. I have to say here that the younger girls are a little more savvy than our mothers and aunts are! For example you go to a wedding and see all these aunties, they're wearing white makeup and their skintone is not at all natural. They put on too much foundation, which is not their colour and only then they think they've got makeup on. That's not the case! I think foundation should be invisible, that's really important.

Also, doing both your eyes and lips is a no-no -- that becomes too heavy. One should keep either one of the two elements heavy -- the lips or the eyes.

Another thing is using too much of eyeliner that drips onto the face. Rani (Mukerji), eyelines and mascara are not very flattering! (laughs)

'Use waterproof mascara and eyeliner so you don't get racoon eyes'

What are the makeup essentials that every woman must have?

Cory: According to me -- compact, lip-pencil,kajal. You can do anything with them!

Clint: First off, you must have a sunscreen moisturiser. A compact is also very essential because it helps to keep the skin matte and freshen it up. And waterproof mascara and eyeliner so you don't get racoon eyes when you cry or sweat or if it's too humid outside!

'Rohit Verma always gets it right!'

Which celeb gets her makeup right every time -- and who doesn't?

Cory: Pooja Mishra doesn't seem to get it right -- ever!

Rohit Verma always gets it right (laughs). No, I'm just kidding! Though he's been getting it right'er' over the years (laughs again), but Rohit Verma could give tips to Pooja Mishra!

As to who always gets it right in public, to be very frank I've always found Dia Mirza impeccable. It has a lot to do with her skin quality, but it also has to do with the fact that she never tries to overdo her eyebrows, overdo her eyes, overdo her lips. She doesn't need foundation so it is fairly easy for her, but it requires control, perception and proportion and very often celebrities don't have control, proportion and perception.

Clint: I would say Katrina Kaif gets it right each time -- she's stunning.

Who I think needs a little bit of help is Rani (Mukerji). She's got her body right now (laughs) and the makeup is getting there but there are a lot of hits and misses. All I can advise her is to take it a little easy and not get so serious about things!

'Use less makeup'

Can you share some basic tips that a person must keep in mind while applying makeup?

Clint: Number One is to always use a sunscreen moisturiser: It not only protects the skin, your makeup stays on better during the day.

Number Two is use less! Start with a smaller amount of makeup and then build up, add on as much as you need of the colour. Because if you add in too much of colour, then you can't take it off and you have to remove all of it. Always start with less and increase the colour slowly.

Number Three is practice your look. If there's something new you've not done before and you want to just try it out, do so at home just for fun and see how it looks. And as you practice of course, your hand becomes steady, especially with liquid liners and things like that. I think girls need a little bit of practice.
