Supermodel Pia Trivedi talks about how modelling has changed her life and offers advice to aspiring models.
What are you wearing today?
The pants are by Prashant Verma. He is a designer from Delhi. The ganjee is from Zara.
What motivates you to go back on the ramp?
It's always been my passion. It is something that I love to do. The clothes, make-up, hair and the entire set up just gets me back. I have millions of friends in the industry. I don't take modelling as a job and just enjoy walking on the ramp.
Describe the atmosphere when you are backstage.
I just came for one show this year. I walked the ramp for Shehla Khan. Generally it is very chaotic at the fashion week. Over the years I know the mood of the girls backstage. First day it is very exciting but by the second day it gets so dull and monotonous. We generally get books to read, chat with each other, surf the net and listen to music. It's always fun backstage where models love to socialise.
After all these years how would you define fashion?
Fashion is all about carrying the right looks, the clothes. Make up, the models and designers... these things would never change. Fashion in India is growing so much as it has and so many international designers and international labels are coming here. It's an amazing time for the industry.
How has modelling changed other aspects of your life?
I would like to believe that nothing has changed but I think my privacy has been compromised. After being in the industry for so many years, people do recognise me and I am a very private person by nature. I would just walk out to drink a coffee or catch up a movie in my pajamas and T-shirt (smiles). I also have to be a little conscious of how I look as a lot of people look up to me.
What distinguishes a good model from a bad one?
Earlier in the days I was having the same conversation with a friend of mine and I would say it is just the years of experiences that is the distinguishing factor. There are a lot of young models today and it's not easy for them. It's difficult to get your make-up and hair right, wear heels and carry yourself graciously on the ramp. It takes years of experience to do it.
Do you have any favourite models from the new generation?
I love Kanishta Dhankar, Erika Packard and Surelee Joseph. I quite enjoy watching them on the ramp.
Every girl has a special "can't live without this" staple in her closet, what's yours?
Sunglasses I think I own more than 40 pairs (smiles).
What are some of your hidden talents?
Not many people know that I am a huge animal lover. Also my sister (Binal Trivedi) and I started a PR and marketing firm for luxury goods in Goa. I like the luxury things in life.
What advice would you give to models trying to establish themselves?
I find it very weird when young models come and ask me for any advice. I am still used to ask my seniors. All I can say to people who would like to enter modelling and the young generation of models is that watch the veterans in the field and learn from them but at the same time don't imitate anyone.

What would you like to cook for a romantic date?
I have just started cooking and I am learning it. I tried my hand at making pasta and it turned out good so I would cook that with some red wine.
