Tad late perhaps, but a small group of women and men staged a silent demonstration on Day Four of the Lakme Fashion Week. This wasn’t however the first time people came out in protest of something at the fashion event. Photographs by Rajesh Karkera
Four long days after the brutal gang rape of a young photojournalist, the good folks at Lakme Fashion Week thought it would be a good time to stage a protest.
Models and designers walked from the entrance to the media centre holding various placards that had messages such as: 'Being brave is in fashion' and 'Keep India safe' among others.
While the runway has been free of any protests so far -- LFW's 'protest designer' Narendra Kumar has been missing in action this season -- the story of the dastardly act had been very much alive at the event's media centre.
Even as a few heads did turn in the evening, it seemed more like a token protest that didn't last for more than a few minutes.

Models, designers protest Mumbai rape at LFW

In 2011, models, designers, journalists and even attendees at the Lakme Fashion Week sported the Gandhi cap that read 'I am Anna Hazare' (in Marathi) as a mark of support towards Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption that was gathering steam at the moment.
The caps became something of a statement through the day even as few attendees were seen wearing it on the following day.
Such was the impact of the protest back then that our correspondent on the field that day reported this: “media representatives from TV channels who generally park themselves at leisure for the rest of the day till a celebrity lands up, stood up from their spots and rushed with their mics and other camera equipment along with camerapersons and photographers to find out how the fashion industry was reacting to the anti-corruption revolution.”
