World's richest alumni: Mumbai University beats Cambridge

With 17 universities in the top 20, the United States of America dominates the global alumni rankings.

Singapore-based wealth analysis firm Wealth X has compiled a list of the top universities that have the richest alumni in the world.

Titled the UK University UHNW (ultra high net worth) Alumni Rankings Special Report, the study ranks UK universities based on the number of ultra high net worth (UHNW) alumni.

The 18-page report features a total of 2,318 UHNW alumni from top 20 universities in the world.

These UHNW individuals have a combined net worth of US$267 billion.

With fifteen universities from the United States of America making it to the top 20, it clearly dominates the global rankings.

Only three universities from the United Kingdom made it to the global top 20, while India's University of Mumbai also made it to the list surpassing the prestigious University of Cambridge and Brown University.

Also, according to the report, males represent 91 per cent of the richest alumni population.

20. Brown University, USA

One of America's oldest private league university makes it the top 20 list.

CNN founder Ted Turner, governor Bobby Jindal and actor Emma Watson have all graduated from this university.

Number of richest alumni: 349

Total alumni worth: $23bn


19. University of Cambridge, UK

One of United Kingdom's oldest public research university, the University of Cambridge is ranked at Number 19 in terms of alumni worth.

According to the report, this institute does not have the highest population of rich alumni, but at $93 billion dollars, it definitely has the highest alumni worth in the whole of UK.

Leading physicist and author Stephen Hawking, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, actors Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry have studied at this university.

18. University of Mumbai, India

The Mumbai University is the only university from Asia to have featured in the Top 20.

With the likes of Mukesh Ambani, MD Reliance Industries, Chanda Kochhar, CEO, ICICI Ltd and cricketer Sunil Gavaskar among its notable alumni, this university has definitely made the country proud today.

Total alumni worth: $37bn


17. University of Southern California

The private research university had the distinction of producing athletes who have brought home the highest number of Olympic medals (287) so far.

According to this ranking, the University of South California also produces rich graduates.

Creator of the Star Wars franchise George Lucas graduated from the University's School of Cinematic Arts. Astronaut Neil Armstrong and actor Zeenat Aman also studied here.

16. University of Oxford, UK

With over 400 rich graduates to its credit, the University of Oxford tops the UK list of richest alumni and ranks at Number 16 in the global rankings.

Bestselling author Amitav Ghosh, television commentator Karan Thapar and actor Girish Karnad have pursued their graduation from Oxford.

Total worth: $51bn


15. University of Michigan, USA

The public research university, which is also the oldest in Michigan is ranked at Number 16.

The University of Michigan has so far produced 26 Rhodes scholars, seven Nobel prize winners, 116 Olympic medallists and 18 Pulitzer prize winners.

14. University of California, Berkeley, USA

On number 14 is the University of California, Berkeley.

This University is home to 71 Nobel prize winners, 20 Academy and 11 Pulitzer prize winners.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and actor Gregory Peck are among its notable alumni.

13. Northwestern University, USA

With 451 graduates, America's Northwestern University, USA comes in at Number 13.

Among its two lakh odd alumni include several Nobel laureates and 38 Pulitzer Prize winners.

12. Boston University, USA

One of the largest private universities in the US, the Boston University now prides itself for being one the highest contributors of the economy.

Between its faculty and alumni, this university has produced seven Nobel and 22 Pulitzer Prize winners so far.

11. University of Virginia, USA

Ever since it was conceived and designed by the country's president Thomas Jefferson in 1819, it has added several feathers to its cap, the distinction of producing wealthy graduates being the the latest.

Ex-president of NASDAQ Alfred Berkeley and chairman of PepsiCo Steven Reinemund graduated from Virginia University.

10. Princeton University, USA

One of the prestigious Ivy league universities makes it to the Top 10 global list of alumni-rich universities.

Now we understand why this university has the largest university endowment in the world.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the country's first lady Michelle Obama are among Princeton's famous alumni.

Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, astronomer Edwin Hubble and former CEO of Goldman Sachs Jon Corzine are all products of this university.

Also according to a Forbes feature on Billionaire universities, three of the 25 richest Americans and 20 living billionaires including American tycoon Warren Buffet have all studied at this university.

3. Stanford University, USA

Rounding off the Top three is Stanford University, USA.

According to a Forbes report, in 2009, it had produced the second highest billionaires in the world.

Among this university's notable graduates include founder of Dolby Laboratories Ray Dolby and Nike co-founder Phil Knight.

Wipro founder Azim Premji has an electrical engineering degree from Stanford.

2. University of Pennsylvania, USA

One of the founding members of the Association of American Universities emerged runner up.

According to Forbes, it has 18 living billionaires to its credit, as of 2010.

Chairman of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group Anil Ambani, CEO Warner Music Group Stephen Cooper and billionaire investor Ronald Perelman are some of its influential graduates.

With over 2900 rich graduates, Harvard University tops the list of international universities.

At 52, it also has the most number of billionaires according to Wealth-X.

Chairman of Barclays Plc Marcus Agius, CEO Microsoft Steve Ballmer and CEO, Chairman Goldman Sachs Lloyd Blankfein have all graduated from this university.
