India Today has released the results of its annual survey of the best Indian colleges 2012. In the fourth part of a series, we bring you the top 10 commerce colleges, as per their findings. (Please also read: top 10 science colleges, top 10 medical colleges, top 10 engineering colleges)

One of the leading magazines in the country, India Today has prepared a list of the best colleges in India for this year.

Using data from the Internet, various published reports and the Association of Indian Universities Handbook, the publication partnered with global marketing and advertising research company Nielsen to draw up a list of over 1,500 colleges.

Faculties from leading institutes across the country rated all but their own colleges and universities on the basis of reputation, quality of academic input, student care, infrastructure and job prospects; those that figured high up in the rankings also had to submit factual data to figure in the list.

10. Stella Maris College, Chennai

In tenth place is Stella Maris College, Chennai

When it opened on August 15, 1947, there were only 32 students. It gained autonomous status in 1987, and currently caters to over 3,000 students annually.

Stella Maris has a co-operative store on campus, run by students of the commerce department under the supervision of the faculty. The store sells stationery and other items to college-goers at a reasonable price.

9. Hindu College, New Delhi

Next in at nine we have Hindu College, New Delhi.

Established in 1899, it is one of the oldest colleges in the city.

Television producer Siddhartha Basu, former president and CEO of the Global Fund for Women Kavita Ramdas and leading economist and financial journalist Ila Patnaik have studied here.

8. Madras Christian College, Chennai

Moving up one spot from last year is Madras Christian College, Chennai.

Founded in 1837, the MCC is one of the oldest colleges in the country.

It admits over 6,500 students across its various undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.

Veteran economist KN Raj and PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi graduated from this autonomous institute.

7. NM College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai

In seventh place is Shri Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai.

Established in 1964, it is best known for its courses in commerce and economics.

Besides three-year bachelor programmes, Narsee Monjee also offers vocational courses affiliated to the University of Mumbai, namely marketing and salesmanship, accounting and auditing.

6. Christ College, Bangalore

Bangalore's Christ College ranks sixth on the list.

Established on July 15, 1969, it is also known as Christ University and was recognised by the University Grants Commission of India on June 17, 1972.

Christ was the first college in Karnataka to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for providing quality education to students.

5. Hansraj College, New Delhi

From Number Ten in 2011, Hansraj College New Delhi has managed to reach the top five this year.

Established in 1948, it is one of the largest in the city. Possessed of six computer and 18 science laboratories, Hansraj offers courses in science, commerce and arts at both the undergraduate and post-graduate level.

Indo-Canadian entrepreneur Aditya Jha and bureaucrat Navin Jindal are among its notable alumni.

4. Loyola College, Chennai

Loyola College, Chennai comes in at four.

Established in the year 1925,it is best known for its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in science and humanities.

Notable alumni include management guru CK Prahalad, Chairman of the Sun TV Network Kalanithi Maran, MD of The Hindu Group of Publications Narasimhan Ram and owner and chairman of IPL cricket team Chennai Super Kings N Srinivasan.

3. Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi

Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi secures third place.

A constituent college of the University of Delhi, it was established in the year 1956.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning Burmese democrat Aung San Suu Kyi and CEO of HSBC Bank Naina Lal Kidwai have graduated from here.

2. St Xavier's College, Kolkata

According to the India Today survey, the second best college for commerce is St Xavier's College, Kolkata.

Founded in 1860, it is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and acquired autonomous status in 2006.

Recognised as one of the best colleges in the city, its alumni include billionaire and CEO of ArcelorMittal Lakshmi Mittal and chairman of RPG Enterprises Harsh Goenka, among others.

1. Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi

Maintaining its top position from 2011 as India's best college of commerce is New Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce.

Established in 1926, it is spread across a sprawling 17-acre campus.

The college boasts of the best infrastructure, a world-class teaching staff and specialises in offering courses in economics and commerce only.

Some of the well-known personalities that have studied here include MP Arun Jaitley, CEO of YES Bank Rana Kapoor and hotelier Lalit Suri.
