3 Indian univs in Asia's top 100 universities 2013

The Times Higher Education has come up with a list of the top 100 universities in Asia. Find out if your favourite Indian university has made it to the list.

Education magazine Times Higher Education has recently come up with the first Asia University Rankings 2013.

The rankings are based on the same criteria as the THE World University Rankings, powered by Thomson Reuters.

The world class universities were judged for their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

While 22 universities from Japan made it to the Top 100, China and Taiwan were not far behind with 15 and 17 universities from the respective countries featuring in the list.

Six universities from Hong Kong were ranked among the top 50 while 14 from Korea featured in the top 100.

Three leading institutes from India also made it to the Top 100 of which one of them made it to the Top 30.

One of India's best public universities, the IIT-Roorkee is ranked at Number 56 in the Asia world university rankings.

Besides research, it is known for its emphasis on scientific and technological education.

The 365-acre campus has 18 academic departments offereing specialisations in engineering, applied sciences, humanities, social Sciences and management and caters to over 4000 students annually.

The Top 100 list also features the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay at Number 33.

Founded in 1958, it was the second IIT to be set up with funds from the UNESCO.

The institute's 550 acre-campus has 10 multi-disciplinary centres and 3 schools of excellence.

It has 14 academic departments that offer doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In the last five decades, over 39,000 students have graduated from this institute.

Not far behind is IIT-Kharagpur ranked at Number 30.

With an annual enrolment of 7000 students, the government institute, which is also the first IITs to be set up in the country in 1951, today caters to engineering, management and law students.

At 21,000 acres, it has one of the largest campuses in the country.

Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) K Radhakrishnan and activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal have graduated from this institute.

Rounding off the top 10 of the first Asia rankings this year is Korea Republic's Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

The institute was established in 1971 by the Korean government as the nation's first research oriented science and engineering institution replete with government funding.

It has an academic staff of over 500 who organise research activities in co-operation with other schools.

In 2009, it catered to 9000 students across its undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes.

Up next in Hong Kong's very own technological sciences institute.

Established in 1991, the HKUST is one of the youngest schools in the list.

It is best known for its research activities and caters to 11,000 students annually.

The 60-acre campus houses the academic building, a sports hall, the student halls, outdoor sports facilities, apartments, staff quarters and the President's Lodge.

Another university from the Republic of Korea that made it the Top 10 is the Seoul National University.

The national research university comprises 16 colleges and six professional schools catering to 30,000 students annually.

It has two campuses in Seoul -- the main campus which is located in Gwanak and the medical one in Jongno.

Its alumni occupy leading positions of governance in academics, government, politics and business.

At Number 7 is Japan's Kyoto University.

The leading national university was founded on May 1, 1869.

It has an annual student enrolment of 22,000 students across its undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes.

The university's Kyodai Law School is one of the most prestigious legal schools in the country.

The university has produced 8 Nobel winners so far, of which four were physicists.

The internationally recognised university comes in at Number 6.

Established in 1911, it has an annual enrolment of over 39,000 students across its undergraduate and post graduate programmes.

Rounding off the Top 5 is private university POSTECH.

Established in 1986, the institute is based in Pohang, South Korea.

The first batch of students passed out on March 2, 1987.

It has 11 undergraduate and 21 graduate departments catering to over 3000 students annually.

The leading research university from China is ranked at Number 4.

Established in 1898, the university's campus comprises 30 colleges for 12 departments offering 93 specialties for undergraduates, 2 for the second Bachelor's degree, 199 at the post graduate level and 173 specialties for doctoral aspirants.

The university is also best known for its campus and houses one of Asia's largest libraries.

The 100-year old university from Hong Kong makes it to the Top 3.

Started in March 1912, the university caters to 21,000 students across its undergraduate and post graduate programmes annually.

One of the oldest universities in Singapore, the NUS emerged runner up.

Started in 1905, the National University of Singapore is one of the largest universities in the country in terms of the number of students it enrols and the curriculum it offers.

The present day University is a result of the merger of the Nanyang University and the University of Singapore, which took place in 1980.

On number one position is Japan's leading University of Tokyo.

Established in 1877, the national institute also known as Todai is a research university located in Bunkyo, Tokyo in Japan.

The University caters to 29,000 students across 10 faculties namely medicine, engineering, law, science, agriculture, economics, arts and sciences, education, pharmaceutical sciences and letters.
