With every two-wheeler company except Bajaj offering scooters now, that day is not far when the company that made 'Haamara Bajaj' a household name will get back to the segment where it once ruled, says Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com.
The Indian two-wheeler market has been seeing a new trend: more and more buyers are opting for scooters.
Bajaj Auto was once the leader in the scooter segment, with the Chetak. That time, this segment was all about geared scooters but Kinetic Honda changed the trend when they brought out gearless scooters.

Currently, the scooter segment is seeing a huge growth in sales, so much that Bajaj Auto has been displaced from the number three spot in two-wheeler sales by TVS Motor.
This development is a shocking one because around 6-7 years back, the Chakan based automaker was gaining momentum so strongly that it was en route to catch India's top selling two-wheeler company for the top spot.

TVS' growth in the Indian market can be attributed to its scooter offerings, the Jupiter performing very well while the Wego also got an update earlier this year.
The Star City+ has also been doing good numbers for the company, contesting in the high volume commuter space.

Bajaj Auto only sells motorcycles and has stayed away from scooters, citing poor margins.
With even Yamaha bringing out scooters, that day is not far when Bajaj will get back to the segment where it once ruled.
In overall sales, Bajaj still trumps TVS as the Pulsar maker gains high volumes from exports.
Meanwhile, TVS also sells moped which helps them bring in numbers. TVS' ex-partner Suzuki, has been surviving in India solely on scooters.
