Running is one of the most effective cardiovascular exercises.

The best part? It does not cost you a thing!

All you really need are a pair of shoes and the will to wake up in the morning and hit the road.

Now you could come up with some lousy excuse of how crowded your city is but if you really, desperately do want to stay in shape, you will find a place to run.

If you haven't practiced any kind of exercise for a long time, we suggest you start by walking.

Eventually, look for different tracks to test your endurance levels or if you cannot, just run against a timer.

Practice Surya Namaskar

The Surya Namaskar is the most underrated form of workout.

A set of 12 poses that pays obeisance to the sun, the Surya Namaskar isn't some mumbo-jumbo.

The wonder of the Surya Namaskar is that it can function as a warm-up before any form of workouts, a stretching routine after a heavy workout session AND a cardiovascular workout in itself (if done at an increased pace).

It can also help you calm down and relax and get you started for the day.

Because the set of 12 poses works on every single part of the body, it also helps you become more flexible and reduce your tummy.

You can read more about the benefits of the Surya Namaskar and learn how to do it here!

Tower running

It may not be very popular in India but it is also one of a very effective endurance sport.

Tower running is exactly what it reads -- you run up tall structures.

More often than not, tower running races take place on the staircases of skyscrapers.

But you don't need to be staying in a tower to run up a flight of stairs, do you?

Put on your running shoes, start the timer and climb the stairs. It really is that easy.

Like in the case of all workouts, keep yourself hydrated and don't push yourself to a point of no return.

Start slow -- you can start by taking the staircase rather than the elevator -- and then increase your pace.

And while there are several expensive options available, there are as many cheaper ones too -- starting from as little as Rs 7,000.

If that is expensive too, consider purchasing a used bicycle and then upgrade if needed.

If you like staying at home, consider investing in a basic stationary bike.
