Kapil Sibal, Union Human Resources Development minister, recently proposed scrapping the Class 10 board examinations as part of a plan to overhaul the Indian education system. Citing the high levels of stress students and their parents suffer during exams as the reason behind the move, Sibal suggests that the exams be made optional in CBSE schools.
What the move would effectively mean is this: students who wish to continue at the same school till Class XII can opt not to take the exam, while students who intend to join another school/college, will need to appear for it.
What do you think of the move to scrap the Class X board exams?
Will this improve the system, giving students a better, low-stress education? Or will it put them at a disadvantage when they appear for higher-level exams?
What about schools under other boards and state-run schools? How will these students be affected?
What could be the short and long term impacts of such a move?
