The Met Gala is unlike any other fashion event.
To the uninitiated, it is the Oscars of fashion -- only much edgier, much more path breaking than the Oscars has ever been.
The gala -- helmed by Anna Wintour, the editor of American Vogue and the artistic director of Condé Nast, since the 1990s -- serves as a fund raiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute as well as the opening night of the department's flagship annual exhibition.
Wintour is credited with transforming what was a local philanthropic event 'into the ultimate global celebrity/power cocktail.'
'Take a jigger of famous names from fashion, add film, politics and business, and mix,' says The New York Times. 'It's such a heady combo that [United States] President [Donald] Trump proposed to his wife, Melania, during the gala in 2004... It is among the hardest party tickets of the year to get.'
According to Vogue Contributing Editor André Leon Talley, 'Over the decades it has become a grand affair -- the party of the year. The one other constant is the red carpet fashion. There is nothing quite like it.'
The red carpet fashion at the Met Gala is expected to be a nod to the theme of the year. It is customary to push the boundaries of fashion on this one.
And that is where Priyanka Chopra won over Deepika Padukone.

This year's exhibition celebrates one of the most revered avant garde fashion designers in history: Rei Kawakubo, the Japanese designer who founded the Comme des Garçons label.
'Kawakubo routinely ends up on every list of "most influential designers of the 20th century" -- and, now, the 21st -- in large part because she refuses to accept any of the rules that govern normal clothing design: that clothes need to be flattering, for example, or that they need to have armholes,' says the NYT. 'Instead, she is interested in challenging our ideas about what defines beauty, identity and gender. She goes where most other designers fear to tread.'
And when the honoree is the high priestess of avant garde fashion, risks are expected. Chopra was among those who got that right.
Ralph Lauren dressed the Quantico star in a double breasted trenchcoat with a dramatic train that captured international best dressed lists and India's imagination.

Chopra, as always, was styled by Cristina Ehrlich.
In a red carpet byte, the actress spoke about how much she loved experimenting with a Kawakubo-isque twist. And it showed -- from the tip of her sharp boots to her top knot.
According to Wall Street Journal, Priyanka Chopra’s 8-foot-long train was so big, that a limousine wasn’t enough.
Chopra had to hire a Mercedes van, and 'stand up on the half-mile ride from the Carlyle Hotel to Monday night's Met Gala so as not to rumple it,' the report detailed.
Once inside, she removed the train, it added.

However, Deepika Padukone, Asia's sexiest woman and the other Bollywood star on the Met Gala red carpet, clearly didn't embrace the challenge of the 'Art of the In-Between' and walked away poorer for it.
Though perfectly lovely in an elegant Tommy Hilfiger gown, she passed the red carpet unnoticed by anyone but the media at home.

Padukone's red carpet walk was as vanilla as Chopra's was dramatic.
Since she starred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage Padukone has made the rounds of multiple international red carpets, but her fashion choices so far have failed to put her in Chopra's league.
