Novelist Renu Balakrishnan will conduct a workshop for budding writers at the Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai.
Do stray comments and incidents trigger thoughts and emotions in you?
Do you mull over these and try to understand the larger picture?
This course will help you turn these into short, meaningful essays and polish them for publishing or for blog posting.
What will you learn?
You will understand the genre and the rules of writing creative nonfiction.
How to use the tropes of fiction to enliven factual writing.
To use the techniques of writing in scenes, using dialogue, developing characters, describing settings and other aspects of creative nonfiction writing.
You will be able to analyse the structure of the personal essay and read, critique and appreciate elegant examples.
And you will write your own essays.
Duration of the workshop:
6 sessions of 2 hours each starting 6.30 pm at Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai (xaviercomm.org).
The workshop will be held on the following dates:
- February 2018: 8, 15, 22.
- March 2018: 1, 8, 15.
The programme will cost ₹6,000.

She has conducted writing workshops for writers and teachers in schools and colleges.
