These commuter bikes, or Aam Aadmi bikes as they are called because of their affordable pricing, were all the rage in 2014.
Commuter segment, the largest part of the Indian two-wheeler market, is also the world's largest one. However, the trends are changing now, and the superbikes launched in 2014 far outdid the commuter segment. Despite these high end launches, 2014 has seen some unique and interesting motorcycle launches in the 100-110cc category.
Let's checkout all the commuters launched in 2014.
Hero MotoCorp Splendor iSmart
The Splendor iSmart was among the new and updated products unveiled by the Hero MotoCorp in October 2013 including the HF-Deluxe ECO. Based on the Splendor NXG, the bike was introduced with some new features including an interesting dual tone paint job, sportier visor, split grab rail, handlebar weights and the most important first-in-class switchable i3S (idle start stop) technology for improved mileage figures in urban areas.
The Hero Splendor iSmart was launched in March 2014 with a price tag of Rs 49,967 (ex-showroom Mumbai).
Hero MotoCorp HF-Deluxe ECO
The Hero HF-Deluxe ECO is an upgraded version of the popular commuter bike HF-Deluxe and is priced just Rs 1,000 above it.
The bike comes with a new and only bright green colour with 3D body graphics for an ECO friendly look.
The bike also gets some aerodynamic features to reduce the fuel consumption including Aero mirrors, airfoils on leg-guards and low rolling friction tyres.
Otherwise it is the same top variant of the Hero Hf-Deluxe. It was launched in March 2014 at Rs 46,262 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
Hero MotoCorp Splendor Pro Classic
Hero MotoCorp unveiled a very unique version of India's best-selling two wheeler Splendor Pro Classic in a Cafe-Racer avatar at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo in February 2014. But the bike was finally launched in October with a price tag of Rs 50,833 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
It is the same 8.25bhp Splendor Pro motorcycle with a major cosmetic upgradation featuring classic round headlight and speedometer, sporty handlebar, vintage style paint and graphics, single seat with cafe racer style cowl, round tail lamp and turn indicators, steel mudguards and shiny spoke wheels.
Hero MotoCorp Passion Pro TR
Along with the country's best-selling motorcycle, one of the most stylish commuters ever, the Hero Passion range of motorcycles also get an upgraded on/off road version, christened Passion Pro TR.
Based on the 8.25bhp Passion Pro, the TR version gets headlight grill, handlebar with crossbar, knuckle guards, new sportier graphics, extra grip knee pads on fuel tank, engine bash plate, high mounted front fender with tyre hugger, front disc brake standard and on/off road compatible MRF Moto-D tyres.
The bike has been priced at Rs 54,039 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
Honda CD 110 Dream
Launched in July 2014, Honda CD 110 Dream was introduced as the most affordable motorcycle of the company with a price tag of Rs 41,100 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The bike is based on the popular Dream commuter series including the Yuga and Neo versions.
With a very basic strip-down design, the main feature of the bike is its 110cc engine, which puts out 8.2bhp of power, 8.6Nm of torque and claims to return a healthy mileage of 74kmpl.
TVS Star City Plus
TVS launched its Star City in a sportier and more practical avatar with a superscript '+' in the May 2014.
The all new, Star City Plus is based on Phoenix's platform and is powered by a new 110cc Eco Thrust engine, designed for better fuel economy.
The bike also gets some very attractive features like a multi-functional analog-digital console with service reminder, a stainless steel muffler guard, chrome finished handlebars, coloured shock absorbers, Econometer and a dual tone seat.
And this sporty, feature loaded commuter has been made available in two trims -- Kick Start Mag and Self Start Mag, priced at just Rs 41,500 and 44,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively.
Mahindra Centuro N1 and Rockstar
Mahindra two-wheelers launched a stripped-down version of its Centuro N1 in January 2014, priced at Rs 46,450 (ex-showroom Delhi), around Rs 2,800 lesser than the Centuro O1.
It is the same bike that created a new level of advancement in its segment and gets all those features except the digital instrumentation replaced by an analog type one.
After that, the company introduced a more affordable version of the motorcycle, christened as Rockstar in August, priced at just Rs 43,680 (ex-showroom,Delhi).
The bike gets a new paint scheme that goes with its name, while it misses some features including digital instrument cluster, remote key fob and the anti-theft alarm system, which results in a cost cut of around Rs 5,500 compared to the Centuro O1.
