Android Gets Smarter This September

Android's September Drop brings smarter AI, easier messaging and practical everyday features.

Google has rolled out its September Android Drop, a feature update that adds new tools to Android phones without waiting for a full Android version upgrade.

Unlike major Android updates that usually arrive once a year, Android Drops introduce smaller, useful improvements every few months.

These updates focus on making everyday tasks easier through artificial intelligence (AI), accessibility features and better messaging.

The latest update introduces smarter ways to remember where you keep important items, reduce motion sickness while using your phone in a moving vehicle, help people with low vision understand their surroundings and make chats more personal.

Never lose track of important items

Gemini can now remember where you kept your valuables.

One of the most practical additions is a new memory feature in Find Hub.

Instead of attaching a tracker to every item, users can simply ask Gemini where they kept something important.

For example, if you place your passport in a bedroom drawer or leave a spare key in a cupboard, Gemini can save that location in Find Hub.

Users can even attach a photo while saving the location.

Later, asking Gemini where the item is or checking the remembered items section in Find Hub will bring up the saved location.

The feature will be available on Android 16 and newer devices in supported regions.

Motion Assist helps reduce travel sickness

Many people feel uncomfortable using their phones in a moving car. Google is trying to solve that with Motion Assist.

The feature places small, animated bubbles on the screen that move with the vehicle's motion.

The idea is to help reduce the mismatch between what your eyes see on the screen and what your body feels during travel.

Users can turn it on automatically, add it to Quick Settings and even change the bubbles' colour, shape and transparency.

Motion Assist will be available on phones running Android 17.

Guided Vision helps you see more clearly

Google is also expanding accessibility with Guided Vision in Gemini Live.

By sharing the phone's camera, users can ask Gemini to describe what it sees.

The feature was developed with input from blind and low-vision communities and can help with everyday tasks such as reading small labels, checking menus in dim restaurants or identifying household objects.

If the camera is not pointing correctly, Gemini provides voice instructions to help users move or centre it for a better view.

The feature is expected to arrive on Android 9 and newer phones where Gemini is available.

Collaboration and planning get easier

Google is making group planning simpler by bringing Google Keep directly into Google Messages.

Instead of switching between apps, friends and family can create shopping lists, travel plans or shared notes from inside a conversation.

Everyone in the chat can view and update the same note in real time.

The rollout has already started in Google Messages.

Give every chat its own look

Google Messages is also getting custom chat themes.

Users can set different backgrounds and colour combinations for individual conversations.

They can choose built-in wallpapers or use their own photos, while the message bubbles automatically match the selected theme.

This allows each conversation to have its own unique style, whether it is a family group, a travel chat or a conversation with a close friend.
