'Even rotis in hotels make you fat!'

January 5, 2009
Shraddha Behl*, a 24-year-old Kingfisher airhostess, doesn't mind the weight control regulations her airline imposes on its cabin crew. She has always been active and health-conscious, which makes it easy for her to abide by the regulation. She makes sure she carries food from home, doesn't eat oily snacks and uses the hotel gyms when on layovers. However, she does think that the weight limitation is a bit unfair, given that women from different parts of India have different body structures. "It's really sad that some of my friends have been grounded because of their weight. They are just built differently -- they are North Indians and good workers. But because the scale says they are a few kilos heavier than they should be, they aren't flying. In fact, even though I'm so conscious, I'm always on the border because my bones are heavy."

Shraddha feels that the best way to keep your weight down is to eat healthy. "Even rotis in hotels make you fat, man! There's nothing like home-cooked food. But even that's not enough if you don't exercise. You need to watch your diet and be persistent in the gym as well."

It's been two years since this young lady joined Kingfisher; she is a graduate in fashion design and was in her last year of college when she saw a Kingfisher ad in the paper, inviting applications. She applied for a lark and was seriously on the lookout for a fashion design internship. But when she got through her aviation interviews, she decided to fly with the airline for a few years before going back to a career in fashion design. "I won't be sticking with this job for too long. I seriously don't know how people do it for years and years. Especially with private airlines, you are always overworked, under-appreciated and have zero social life. This job also takes a toll on your health after a while," she says.

Shraddha's advice:

  • Stay away from hotel food (it makes you fat!) and also avoid airline food and oily snacks.
  • Use the gym as often as you can, even on layovers.

    *Names changed to protect privacy.
