There are around 33 million carvings in the temple!

The temple complex which is within a high-walled enclosure, has 12 huge towers or gopurams that have intricate designs in colour. It is estimated that there are around 33 million carvings in the temple.

The four main towers - North, South East and West -- out of the 12, almost reach the skies and are visible from most parts of the city. They house the gates that lead into the main temple complex. The eight other towers lead to the sanctums of the main deities.
