Designer speak: JJ Valaya

JJ Valaya started off Lakme Fashion Week with a bang this year, showcasing a cutting-edge collection alongside jewellery from sponsors Gitanjali. Here, he discusses his autumn/winter line and trends to watch out for this season:

About the collection: "This is the first showing of my new, ready-to-wear label 'Valaya BASE'. It's different from all the other Valaya lines of clothing I've been putting out up until now. The collection itself is called 'Paisa' -- it's essentially inspired by currency notes. You could say that it is a fantasy-inspired introduction of money to the kingdom of Valaya!"

Trends to watch out for this year: "This year, the trend is a mix of both structured and drooping silhouettes. Colours should essentially remain neutral, except for accents of red like in the line we showcased -- stick to overwhelming shades like ivory, charcoal, mocca etc."

Take on Fashion Week: The rift between the fashion fraternities of Delhi and Mumbai have left JJ Valaya bemused. "It's not about Delhi's designers and Mumbai's designers, we are all Indian designers," he says. "The difference between the WLIFW (Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week) and the LFW (Lakme Fashion Week) is essentially two letters!"
