This is a piece of hardware that promises not to go unnoticed. If cellphones were an art, that would make the iPhone the Mona Lisa. Ok, maybe I am overdoing it a bit; but I can guarantee any gadget freak that they will honestly appreciate Apple's effort in designing the iPhone. Starting from the packaging and the exterior shell and all the way to the 'Startup' screen and the fluid menus of the OS, this hardware oozes sex appeal.
The original iPhone that was launched in 2007 lacked 3G capability. July 11 2008 will mark the day the 3G model hits shelves in most countries, while we in India may have to wait till the end of the year. The iPhone OS is a heavily modified version of the Mac OS X, optimised to run on an ARM11 series processor in tandem with a PowerVR MBX 3D processor to drive the incredibly smooth and gorgeous user interface on a heavily-pixel-dense, scratch-resistant, multi-touch screen consisting of three separate sensors and measuring 320x480 pixels.
Finger motion is the only input the iPhone requires to navigate through the aesthetically designed menus. The OS requires only 128MB DRAM and occupies a little over half a gigabyte of space. Depending on your data storage need you can choose an iPhone with 8 or 16GB of storage memory.
The 3G model boasts of connectivity options that support most of the existing networks in the world, with the exclusion of HSCSD. Although lacking a flash LED, the 2MP camera fares well in well-lit conditions. It is powered by a standard Li-ion battery.
Though the launch price is yet to be announced for the base model it will attract a younger, fun-loving crowd because of its sleek design and rich multimedia capability. This is not a smartphone for the serious business types primarily due to the lack of a QWERTY keyboard replaced by a virtual touch-sensitive one.
