So let's talk numbers

A salesman who comes across as a long lost friend is someone you should be wary of. To top this, s/he might compliment you on your knowledge of cars and your taste. All this is meant to reduce your bargaining prowess. Remind yourself that this is a business deal and that there are no free lunches here.

Take your mechanic along with the list of minor faults in the car to buy yourself some bargaining power. Most dealers will offer you a discount rather than lose a customer.

If you are not good at bargaining, opt for a dealer who works on the fixed price model. These are usually good deals and you can be quite sure that you have got yourself a decent bargain.

Says Parikshit Gokhale, 25, businessman: "I make it a point to get a few free service coupons for my car. Also the cost of minor add-ons, changes, touch-ups etc. should be borne by the dealer."
