Get your (video) game on! 5 hot picks

July 4, 2007
Video games have today moved far beyond the traditional single player and two-player formats to the multiplayer format. Traditionally restricted to PC games, the new generation of console games too are packed with a host of multiplayer options.

So if you're looking to get in on the action, check out these hot picks:

World of Warcraft (PC game)

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game(MMORPG). It is a pay-to-play game only available on the PC platform. The player assumes a character or avtaar and over the course of the game grows, earns money and power by way of completion of tasks, exploring the in-game world and fighting monsters.

While some tasks can be completed without external help, more advanced challenges require the combined efforts of multiple players. The number of players may vary from 2 to 40, depending on the challenge.

Pros
~ World of Warcraft can be an incredibly addictive game. The possibilities are almost limitless as your character keeps growing and there's always something to look forward to.
~ With over 8 million players worldwide, you'll never fall short of people to play WoW with.

Cons
~ Role-playing games aren't everyone's cup of tea. Unlike shooting or racing games, there's no instant gratification to be had. But those who put in the time and effort will reap the rewards.
~ WoW can be an expensive affair. Apart from the game software, you are also required to pay a monthly fee to play the game online, so you may need to loosen the purse strings a bit if you intend to play WoW for a while.

Fun factor
If you're into role-playing games in general and MMORPGs in particular, you needn't look beyond World of Warcraft. There's a reason the game has 8.5 million loyal devotees worldwide. The experience of watching your character grow and evolve is exhilarating.
