Settlement or no settlement... pay up

Here's how Rana Bhattacharjee gets threatening calls despite settling his credit card account:

I had a HDFC bank credit card long back and had settled the dues around October 2004 after the bank gave me a discount. The person, who collected the cheque (Rs 45,000) and gave me the settlement letter, cut off the card into two and asked me to mail it to the bank.

After that there was no follow up and knocks. I was there at the same residence till January 2006. Then I changed my residence twice. Suddenly almost after 3 years the bank is calling me (on my mobile) and telling me that I have some dues with me. When I told them that I had already settled the credit card account, they asked me to produce the settlement letter.

Now, I had kept the letter safely, but after almost 3 years and 2 house changes, it got misplaced.

They said that either I show them the settlement letter or that I should pay them the dues (Rs 7000/8000) immediately. I mean, it was absurd, after 3 years asking for something which people have already forgotten about?

Then I asked them as to why they did not contact me when they had my number, email id and that I was staying in the same house for 15 months after the account was settled. They kept harping that I need to show the settlement letter or pay.

After that they also started calling my native address (my parents-they had this number also and they did not feel the urge to contact them all these 3 years) and started threatening them.

I do not know what to do.
