For one, this sleepy hill station in Karnataka is stunning. It is rich in plantations, richer in history and, as if to prove its credentials, is often referred to as the Scotland of India.

The main town, Medikeri, is 1,525 meters above sea level, and has an old-world charm that makes you feel as if time has decided to stand still for a while. A walk around town only reinforces that feeling, especially if you stop by places like the nineteenth century Medikeri Fort, which now houses a prison, temple, chapel, museum and assorted government offices.

And no, the monsoon -- between June and September -- isn't the best time to visit, as heavy rains make travelling difficult. If you want to go, the next couple of months are a very good time.
