What: Applications are invited for the Future Cities India -- 2020 Competition, a national level design competition for high school and technical college students sponsored by the ministry of science and technology.
The Future Cities India -- 2020 Competition is an infrastructure planning, design and engineering competition.
It encourages students to develop, design and integrate the functionality of their ideas while fostering an interest in mathematics, science, engineering, architecture and facility planning through a hands-on, real-world application.
Details
~ The competition will start with a pilot in Delhi.
~ It is a team based programme with each school judging their internal teams in order to select one team for the national competition.
~ It is focused on real world challenges, using real world data, with participants using globally recognised professional software.
~ The team will have teachers as programme counsellors and practising professionals as team mentors.
~ The outcomes will be realistic/ innovative proposals/ answers to the challenges being addressed.
~ It is inspired by and working in cooperation with National Engineers Week Future City Competition in the United States.
Team composition
The students
~ The students are the actual creators of their infrastructure solution with help and advice from their volunteer engineer and teacher.
~ They are directly responsible and accountable for the planning, creation, design and development of all project deliverables.
The teacher - programme counsellor
~ The teacher serves as a facilitator and advisor to the student team members.
~ They can provide team members with examples or helpful hints as the project progresses but should not become part of the team's solution.
The mentor
~ The mentor is a professional representing any of the technical or construction disciplines including engineering, construction planning, facility design, planning, etc.
~ He/ she will be involved in all phases of the competition as an advisor and provide input and technical assistance.
Awards/ Recognition
~ Free Bentley professional software to all participating schools
~ DST will create a Geospatial Lab in each participating school
~ Participatory prizes for all participants
~ First and second best teams get prizes
~ The best team will travel to the USA for Future City USA National Finals in 2007
