"I am totally Western in my design sensibilities. And that's probably why I lost out at the LFH," says Swapnil Shinde.

  • Do you like these designs?

  • "I might incorporate some Indian elements," he adds, "but my design influences are all Western."

    He speaks from experience.

This National Insitute of Fashion Technology graduate studied for a year at Milan's Instituto de Moda Burgo.

And that's where he learnt the importance of detailing.

"Indians put India in everything we do," adds Swapnil, "but I realised that need not be. It's as simple as how you place a zipper in a dress that makes all the difference."

He admires the work of Monisha Jaising, Rohit Bal and, for Indian garments, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

"I like working with flowy and soft garments like chiffons and georgettes. Else raw silk and brocade," he says.

And these are his MUSTs this summer:

    1. Pastels are very in.
    2. Toned down shades of bright colours like pista and mango are in.
    3. I think cottons, chiffons, georgettes are very in.
    4. Skirts, of course. They are in in a big way.
    5. Short dresses. Indians were not really comfortable with short dresses earlier, but that is changing now. Even long dresses are in.
