Niharika and Ayub Khan

The effervescent Niharika is married to actor Ayub Khan.

Both come from diverse backgrounds. Niharika has Punjabi and Gujarati influences in her family, and Ayub comes from a Pathan family.

They are the proud parents of two daughters: Tahura (four years) and Zohra (10 months).

Niharika celebrates Eid with the same zeal that Ayub enjoys Deepavali.

"It’s the perfect time for family bonding, getting together with friends and enjoyment," says Niharika.

What’s in store in the Khan household this year?

"We are spending a lot of money!" says Niharika with a laugh. "Things are hectic. We are refurbishing our home, giving it a fresh coat of paint, getting new upholstery, etc. It is time to give it a new look.

"Our friends and family will come over for the festivities."

While Niharika is not too religious, husband Ayub has been observing the holy month of Ramadan like a devout Muslim. The family joins him for iftaar (breaking the fast) every evening.

While their Zohra is too young to take part actively in the celebrations, Tahura is having a ball!

Niharika confesses, "We will be indulging in some impulsive jewellery shopping for our daughters, and Tahura is planning to get some kaju katli (diamond-shaped cashewnut mithai) for everyone."

Well, isn’t that what festivals are for? Lots of indulgence and some impulsive buying?

The Khans will spend Deepavali with Niharika’s bua (aunt), where they will enjoy a traditional Gujarati dinner. Eid is reserved for Sheer Khorma (a traditional preparation of vermicelli with milk) and Biryani with Ayub’s family.

"It’s time to have fun!" sums up Niharika.
