The Phantom of the Opera
Based on a French novel by Gaston Leroux, that was published in 1910 and first translated into English a year later. This tale of a mysterious figure terrorizing a Paris Opera House to win a young singer he loves has long been a stage favourite.
Although the first musical adaptation came from Ken Hill, it received a lot less publicity than Andrew Lloyd Webber's award-winning version. Hill didn't receive any royalties though. There have been films on it since, but the stage musical continues to draw crowds.
