The Sound Of Music (1965)
Based on the real-life story of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938, this 1965 musical sees Julie Andrews as Maria, a young woman who leaves the confines of a nunnery and becomes nanny for widower Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) with seven kids.
Into a household till then run along military lines, Maria brings back warmth, sunshine, music and love. The movie is set in Salzburg during the early years of the Nazi occupation of Austria.
Directed by Robert Wise (The Day The Earth Stood Still), the film won a Best Picture Oscar. Its Rogers and Hammerstein score has given such timeless tunes as How do you solve a problem like Maria, The hills are alive and My favourite things.
