Mary Poppins (1964)
Consider by many as the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career, Mary Poppins was the only one of his features to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award until Beauty And The Beast in 1991.
Set in Victorian England and based on the character and books by P L Travers, Mary Poppins tells the story of Jane and Michael Banks, who write an advertisement for the 'perfect nanny', attracting the attention of Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews). She comes riding on an umbrella into the lonely lives of two children and changes their world. Soon enough, the pompous father and fatuous mother are transformed by Mary Poppins' special brand of love, compassion and understanding.
Supporting cast members included Dick Van Dyke as her clownish beau Bert, and chimney sweep Ed Wynn as the uncle whose waves of giggles carry him soaring up to the ceiling.
