Hedwig And The Angry Inch (2001)
Meet a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, who suffers a botched sex change operation, a failed marriage to an American military man in order to flee over the Berlin Wall to the US, and who jams with future MTV rock god Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt), till she finally realises he has stolen all her best songs. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants.

Combine this story with complex symbolism, mythical allusions and numbers that cross from hardcore punk to rock n' roll to folk rock, and you have a modern day masterpiece. Sadly, the movie was overshadowed by Moulin Rouge, which opened the same year.

John Cameron Mitchell wrote, directed and starred in the original off-Broadway production of Hedwig and this film.
