Moulin Rouge (2001)
The commercial success of Baz Luhrmann's visual treat introduced a new generation to the musical genre, and set the pace for musicals like Chicago.
Set in the village of Monmarte in 1899, Ewan McGregor portrays a poor English writer named Christian, whose life is changed forever upon entering the Moulin Rouge, where Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent) proudly presents an endless night of forbidden pleasures: sex, music and alcohol.
Christian falls in love with the show's star, Satine (Nicole Kidman). The plotline centres around a disastrous love triangle between the beautiful Satine, the kind Christian and the jealous Duke (Richard Roxburgh), who offers her money and a chance to become a legitimate actress.
Dazzling cinematography, breathtaking sets, stunning costumes and an eclectic score (with elements of pop, swing, jazz and opera) capture the whirlwind excitement of the club in action, as every emotion is pushed to the extreme.
