Aparna Sen [Mr and Mrs Iyer]

Aparna Sen's strength has always been her characterisations. Her films are about real people and situations anyone can find themselves in.

In Mr and Mrs Iyer, Meenakshi (Konkona Sen-Sharma) is a heroine because she saves the life of a Muslim man without a second's hesitation. Raja (Rahul Bose) is a hero because of his little courtesies towards a woman and child travelling alone.

That a film about ordinary people can be extraordinary and absorbing is the mark of a fine director.
